Guide to Root T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 via Odin

The T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 is now can be rooted. One of our trusted android developer slayher over rootzwiki has finally done an awesome job and recently posted a how to root guide of the T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 T989. The rooting process is just a bit too easy, by way of -  flashing a CWR tar file(ClockWorkMod Recovery) via odin and manually installing an SU zip file (Super User) via the phone's SD card.

Download the ClockworkMod Recovery and Superuser zip files and follow the whole rooting instruction from slayher here.

Here's some screen shots on how to Root the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 device.
1) On Odin put the ClockworkMod Recovery tar file for T-Mobile Galaxy S2 .

Odin guide rooting t-mobile samsung galaxy s II
 2) After setting the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 into download mode by pressing Volume Up and Volume Down, connect the phone to PC USB cable. Once Odin detected the phone, hit the "START" button to begin flashing the CWR.
3) When ODIN completes the flashing process and once rebooted this time we need to install the SU zip file on the SD card. Copy the SuperUser zip to the SD card.

4) This time we boot the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 into recovery mode by holding both Vol up and Vol down and by hitting the Power button. Once in Recovery mode make a Nandroid backup on the display option.
Then select Install zip from sdcard, choose the superuser zip use the Volume up and Down key and select the SuperUzer.zip to install.

Once the Super user already installed, reboot the phone again. That's it! you now have a rooted T-mobile branded version of Samsung Galaxy S2 .

How to Root Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 Running Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread XXKG2 Firmware

Here's a step by step procedure on how to root your Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 that now runs Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread firmware version I9100XXKG2 (OXA). This method of rooting is by using Chainfire's modified kernel that can root the Samsung Galaxy S II

Features:
- The kernel is fully stock and taken from the original firmware, with just the following added:
- Root
- Superuser 2.3.6.1
- Busybox v1.16.2androidminimal (from CWM)
- Integrated CWM 4.0.0.2

This instructions as taken from Chainfire's original topic at XDA-developer: I just added some screenshots for much more easier procedure for beginners.

How to Root Samsung galaxy S II I9100 with stock 2.3.4 Gingerbread firmware

1. Download the following files:
- CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.tar from Chainfire here:
- KERNEL_I9100XXKG2_CL375027_REV02_user_low_ship.tar .md5
This is the original kernel for XXKG2 firmware. It's included on the firmware packaged.
http://www.multiupload.com/G1GBNSDYJA
- ODIN Multi Downloader v1.85

- Prepare a good PC or laptop running windows or later OS
- USB cable
- Disable KIES and any antivirus program.

Here's how to root:

1. Extract or unzip the previously downloaded files:

2. Run ODIN v1.85 exe. Click on the PDA button then select and load the

CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.tar
Make sure the Re-Partition is unchecked and only the Auto Reboot and  F-Reset Time are checked.

3. Boot your Galaxy S II in Download Mode
by Pressing and Holding the VolumeDown+OK+Power together.

Samsung galaxy S II download mode button combination
Then connect your Galaxy S II to the computer.

4. Hit the "START" button on Odin to flash CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.tar.
(Now notice that you will have the warning yellow triangle during boot once the flashing complete.)

5. Now put the Samsung Galaxy S II in Download mode again on Step 3.

6. Now this time flash the original kernel of your Samsung Galaxy S II:
Click on PDA button then select and load:
KERNEL_I9100XXKG2_CL375027_REV02_user_low_ship.tar .md5
Make sure the Re-Partition is unchecked and only the Auto Reboot and  F-Reset Time are checked.
Fire up the "START" button to begin flashing the kernel file.

SAmsung galaxy S II root 2.3.4 xxkg2

That's it, once finishes flashing your phone, it will then reboot and you will now notice you no longer have the warning triangle during boot, but you are actually running a rooted 2.3.4 gingerbread Samsung Galaxy S II with Chainfire's CF-Root goodies!

For difficulty or having errors while rooting:
"Get stuck at the Get Pit for Mapping" is actually due to the fact that the phone has not been connected correctly. Try to re-install the kies driver, then changed to a different USB port from your computer.

Motorola XOOM US WiFi-Only Rooted Android 3.2 HTJ85B Update Available

This is an update for US owners of Motorola Xoom WiFi only versions:
Biggest thanks to the efforts of XDA forum member Stachre for those awaiting for root.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This update is for the US Xoom Wi-Fi MZ604 with Android 3.1 ONLY!!! As of v05 of this update, the update script performs NO CHECKS of files before flashing rooted stock 3.2 system and boot images. This means it won't stop you from flashing on a Xoom 3G; it will just flash and you're left with the mess, if any. Please proceed only if you're tech-savvy with Android and the Xoom, ready to restore to stock 3.1 in case of issues, and good at troubleshooting. Please provide feedback and corrections, and I'll update the post as quickly as I can. Thanks!

EARLY RELEASE NOTE: I’ve just finished a couple of rounds of testing, and more updates to this procedure are coming. Please proceed only if you’re tech-savvy with your Xoom, ready to restore to stock in case of issues, and very impatient.

WARNING: Following this procedure may damage or permamently destroy your device. This procedure is provided with NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Perform this procedure at your own risk.

COMPATIBILITY NOTE: I have personally tested this procedure ONLY ON THE US XOOM WI-FI MZ604 with STOCK Android 3.1 HMJ37. If you have a non-US Xoom Wi-Fi, this procedure may break your device. If you have a Xoom 3G, this procedure may break your device.

AWESOMENESS NOTE: Instead of copying files which you’re going to adb push to the platform-tools directory every time, why not just add the directory to yourPATH environment variable (“How to update your PATH”)? That way, you can run adb from any directory you want.

SUMMARY

Here’s a run-down on the current procedure:

* Updates the Xoom WiFi to Android 3.2 using ClockworkMod Recovery (update.zip)
* Resolves issue in updater-script: get_prop ro.product.device wingray
* Leaves existing recovery partition intact (stock update overwrites it on every reboot)
* Sets correct permission on su to enable functioning root
* Flashes the boot (kernel) partition to stock (required at this time)
* Updates system partition
* Stock kernel means no extras (overclocking, etc.) from custom kernels
* Leaves user data intact
